Technology at Work in the Classroom

Today we made good use of the iPads in French class! The website Quizlet is an extremely useful tool to help students learn and reinforce topics we are learning in class. The information directly corresponds to the vocabulary and grammatical structures in their Bon Voyage textbook.
Each student created their own Quizlet login which can be used to track their progress and knowledge of the material. They can also log in at home, or on a mobile device, and use Quizlet to help them study for tests!

Francophone Holiday Presentations

French students shared information about different holidays and festivals celebrated in French-speaking countries. We learned that while many of our holiday celebrations are similar, such as Noel (Christmas), others such as Poisson d'Avril and Bastille Day are very different. We sampled some traditional treats and received an original craft as well!

Francophone Festival/Holiday Project

Research a particular holiday or celebration that is important in a Francophone culture such as Bastille Day (France), any other independence day, Christmas, Easter, St Nicholas Day, and Poisson d'Avril. Tell what is being celebrated and what traditions are associated with the holiday or festival. Discuss similarities and differences to similar holidays/festivals in the United States. You may write a report incuding pictures or design a creative power point presentation. Include pictures of the events, decorations, traditions, etc…

Turkey Day in France??

Did you know that not only do they not celebrate Thanksgiving in France, but the majority of French people don’t have a clue of what Thanksgiving is?
For the French, the only idea of Thanksgiving they have is from American movies or sitcoms, where they can see the traditional, and often goofy or hilarious, Hollywood view of it.
Here are some French terms related to Thanksgiving:
  • Un festin = a (food) feast
  • Une dinde = turkey (note: le dindon is the live animal)
  • La farce = the stuffing
  • Dire ce pourquoi on est reconnaissants = to say what we are grateful for
  • Dire merci, remercier = to say thank you, to thank
  • La récolte = the harvest
  • Les indiens d’Amérique = Native Americans
  • Une colonie = a colony
  • Un pèlerin = a pilgrim
  • Une tradition = a tradition
  • Un match de football américain = a football match

Bonne fête de l'Action de grâce!

Live From Paris!

Thanks to the wonderful world of technology, the 8th grade French class was able to video chat with a classmate and her father using Skype! It was amazing to see them--we even got to see a view of the Eiffel Tower, live! We look forward to hearing more about Paris when they return.

We were all so excited to see them!
It was 5:00 PM Paris time, 10:00 AM Oklahoma time!

 Merveilleux!

Monet Makes an Impression

Today we visited the Philbrook Museum of Art and toured the museum, gardens and special exhibit Monet and the Seine.  We learned how light and texture can affect the look of a painting and how Claude Monet influenced the world of art with his work.

Next Thursday, September 18th, students in Middle School French at All Saints will visit Philbrook Museum to tour the Claude Monet Special Exhibit: Monet and the Seine.  Monet lived outside Paris in the late 1800's at his garden home, Giverny, and is well known as the father of Impressionist painting. This is an incredible opportunity for the students to view original works of such an important and influential artist.  Below is a copy of the Field Trip Form that will come home with the students today.  Merci!!

Student Project: Report on French Speaking Countries Outside of France

Students in Middle School French have begun work on a research project on a French speaking country outside of France. Below are copies of the guidelines, components, and the rubric that have been handed out in class. We will have some time each week in class to research online, but students will be expected to complete much of the project outside of school. We will have weekly progress checkpoints for a grade as well, and these are communicated in class.  Please don't hesitate to contact me at afrisillo@allsaintsba.com if you have any questions. The project is due Tuesday, September 30. We are already having a great time learning about different French speaking countries around the world! Thank you all for your support!
